Danny Glover’s third album, “Awaken, My Love!”, was nominated for 5 Grammys, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Childish won one Grammy for “Best Traditional R&B Performance”, but his live performance of the song “Terrified”, caught my attention.
The live performance featured a brief appearance by JD McCrary, who joined Glover onstage at the end of the great performance. JD will also appear with Glover in the upcoming live-action Lion King film, playing Young Simba, while Glover will play older Simba. Standing on stage in Madison Square Garden, Childish Gambino sported an all white suit, and was backed by a full band and back-up singers all around him.
The performance is a testament to the breadth of talents Danny Glover possesses. He is involved in great movies (he will be in the 2019 Star Wars movie), he has his own TV Show (Atlanta), and he creates music under the moniker “Childish Gambino”. He has reiterated at the Grammys that he is retiring Childish, but several reports have stated his desire to have one final album. For the sake of music, and art, I hope Danny Glover keeps Childish Gambino active.
“Awaken, My Love!” did not end up winning Album of the Year, but is surely one of the better, more original works of 2017. This album will be long viewed as one of the great works of this decade, along with other works by Jay-Z, and Kendrick Lamar, that were also in the running for Album of the Year.
