Lil Pump

By Josh Weiner Fresh off reaching legal adult status on Aug. 17, Lil Pump has plenty of new opportunities to pursue. But even before his 18th birthday, the Florida MC had already done his fair share of horizon-chasing, with multiple payoffs to show for it. The youngster born, Gazzy Garcia, was not particularly active in hip-hop until age 16, when (as described in an interview with XXL) his fellow Miami native, Smokepurpp, nagged him into attempting a freestyle at a studio session. This trial immediately proved to be infectious. Tapping into online resources such as SoundCloud allowed Lil Pump to “[tear] through hip-hop like a tornado, amassing over 2 billion audio and video streams and counting.” Some of the songs that most contributed to his

Eric Bellinger

By Josh Weiner Compton may have lost some of its gritty, N.W.A.- inspiring edge (crime, particularly homicides, have plummeted in recent years). Yet the neighborhood remains a lush source of hard-hitting hip-hop all the same, as titans like Kendrick Lamar have made plain to everybody and even up-and-coming artists of the region are doing their part to prove. One compelling member of the latter category is Eric Bellinger. He grew up with one foot in the music industry– his grandfather was a songwriter for the Jackson 5, and Bellinger actively performed around his native Los Angeles as a high schooler. This multi-talented youngster was also a star running back on his high school football team, and was offered an athletic scholarship at USC. However, he

By Josh Weiner Entering the rap game by means of a successful TV show has certainly worked out in the past (see Drake and Childish Gambino, among others). Can Yazz the Greatest make his way down this path as well? No matter the outcome, Yazz has always been known to set the bar high for himself (“it’s just about keeping my hands in everything,” as he puts it). Born Bryshere Y. Gray, he grew up in Philadelphia and was an active performer across town throughout his adolescence. “I started hitting the streets of downtown Philly… with two back-up dancers,” he explains, “and we started performing like it was Madison Square Garden.” By age 20, he had graduated to the big stage, appearing at Philadelphia-area events

Lil Yatchy

By Josh Weiner Anyone’s 21st birthday is cause for celebration. But why guzzle down 21 shots when (among other reasons to pursue alternate options) you can release a catchy, vibrant 16-minute single-track EP, Birthday Mix 3? This latest release is just one of many examples of Lil Yachty’s tremendous output in the few years since he decided to pursue a career in hip-hop. A native of Atlanta, Miles Park McCollum quickly made an image of himself with “his grenadine-red skinny braids adorned with clear plastic beads.” This trademark persona earned him a trip to Madison Square Garden in 2016, where he was featured in fellow Georgia-born rapper Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion line. He has continued to don that look ever since, as can
